What’s the Value of Encouragement?

I’ll never forget watching a Minor League pitcher, Eric, during one game. He was upset and falling apart because he wasn’t brought into the 8th inning to pitch and to set up the game for the closer - a role that was considered “his job.” After the game, I watched the AA Manager, Mike Shildt, walk up, put his hand on Eric’s shoulder, and say, “We need you tomorrow. You are my 8th inning guy, understand?” In an instant, I saw the pitcher’s doubt, fear, and anger evaporate. And all it took was 10 seconds of encouragement.

We all have an innate need to know that what we do matters. We all want to be affirmed, appreciated, and encouraged. Why? Because encouragement imparts honor, dignity, and value to our lives. Expressing appreciation for a job well done and voicing affirmation of personal growth can change the trajectory of children and adults alike...even professional athletes.

The best part? Encouragement doesn’t cost you a thing. It’s easy, simple, and ends up making you feel just as good as the person you encouraged.

There are plenty of people you’ll interact with today who need encouragement - people at home, at work, or in the community. It is empowering to challenge our self to encourage “just one more” person. What do you think?
